Trying something new

This picture is from several weeks ago -- before we left on our trip...

Some of our friends invited us to join with a group trying out square dancing lessons.

We didn't have quite enough people to make two full squares, so we worked on learning some of the calls and what they mean. For many of us (Carl and me included), the last time we square danced was in grade school (or middle school, or high school), and we learned that some of the techniques we learned then (like swing-your-partner) were altered due to our youth (in school, we hooked elbows, but in this class, we learned to dance around in a couple hold -- I guess our teachers in school thought kids would think that a couple hold was gross!). In just the two lessons that we did so far, there was a LOT that we had not known before -- I don't remember the name of the moves that the other folks were doing at this point while we looked on, but it seemed really complex to us and there were a lot of near collisions! There were times that I got so tickled by our lack of understanding that I just stood and laughed until tears ran down my cheeks. I don't think that it was supposed to be quite as amusing as I found it, but we enjoyed trying it out anyway.

I am not sure whether we are interested enough to participate if they try to continue doing lessons next season -- but at least we know a little better what we'd be getting into!
