State Fair of Texas - part 2

Continuing with our day at the State Fair of Texas...

We headed around the Cotton Bowl looking for Big Tex...

Helmets representing University of Texas and University of Oklahoma, the two teams who will play in the Red River Rivalry October 11 -- which will be the 121st meeting of these two teams at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The rivalry began in 1900, and, with a few years missed before 1929, has continued annually since 1929. The Red River forms part of the border between Oklahoma and Texas. We were looking for a Fletcher's Corny Dog stand and found one near Cotton Bowl Plaza where there was a band playing.

They were dipping and frying the corny dogs to order.

They were okay, but I can't say that they held up to the hype.

We found Big Tex!

"How'd that pickup truck get that parking space up there?"

A view down toward Lone Star Boulevard

We walked through the Truck Zone (an outside area where many of the new pickup trucks were displayed), and then into the Automobile Building where we saw a lot of new cars...

... and a few pickup trucks too.

We have RVing friends who have gotten a new Ford Maverick and have indicated that it can be flat towed.

We looked at more cars in the Centennial Building and saw Jeeps on the obstacle course of "Camp Jeep" -- we were so amazed by the spectacle that we didn't take any pictures!

From there, we headed over to a couple of buildings where there were vendors selling all sorts of items -- but not the "slicing-dicing-amazing demos" that I remember from years ago. Then to the Creative Arts building where we got to enjoy various hand made items by "fellow" Texans...

This was a first prize winning photo...

... and a first prize winning painting...

... and lots and lots of prize winning canned goods!

We stopped to watch a cooking show sponsored by Cutco -- mostly to be able to sit down for a few minutes in air conditioning.

Then we were off to the Livestock Birthing Barn...

... where we saw a litter of piglets who had been born just that morning.

There were also a number of calves that had been born in the last few days, and chicks in various stages of hatching.

As we continued, we saw fun facts about Longhorns,

and had the opportunity to meet "Howdy"...

... more fun facts about Howdy.

With a bit more walking, we finally headed out from the fair...

...as we were meeting Carl's son, Steve, for dinner at El Fenix in Plano.

It was a rather warm day, but we had a good time at "The Most Texan Place on Earth"!
