Kofa National Wildlife Refuge

On Friday, we decided to drive the Jeep to the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge to see if we thought it would be accessible for Gracie and to see if we could find a site. We drove in via a couple of the roads, spending the majority of the time on the Palm Canyon Road.

We drove about 3.5 miles in along BLM land before reaching the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.

A cholla near the entrance of the wildlife refuge.

We had determined by this point that the road in was a bit rough for Gracie so we weren't going to be moving her to park here. Instead, we decided to go ahead and drive in to Palm Canyon and take a hike to see the palm trees.

We were heading toward those mountains...

The road inside the National Wildlife Refuge was actually in better shape that the road across the BLM land, but... we'd have to drive through the BLM land to get to the NWR.

Looking back toward the west from the parking lot at the trail head for the Palm Canyon hike.

The way that the sun played on the mountains was so beautiful.

The beginning of the hike.

The trail was in good shape.

The pictures don't communicate the beauty of the mountains that were around us.

Carl said that this was the "Newlywed Arch" -- just a few days to our first anniversary!

Looking back out the end of the valley where we entered.

The sign pointed to where we could see the palms.

They are up in that crevice.

See them?

Carl thought we should hike up to see them up close...but it seemed a bit extreme!

Beautiful clouds from our campsite with the Ham Radio group.

So, we decided not to move Gracie to the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge... but rather to stay where we were parked at the Roadrunner BLM area with the Ham Radio group... and then to move to Yuma on Saturday. But, we enjoyed our visit to the National Wildlife Refuge! And... maybe we'll stop off and stay at Kofa in the future!
