The Empty Cross

Last Friday, we took advantage of the sunny day and visited The Empty Cross, which is located along I-10 in Kerrville.

Approaching the cross -- statue of "Fisher of Men" (foreground) and "The Coming King" on the path leading up to it.

Obligatory selfie

Scripture verses embedded in the walkways...

... in Spanish, English, and German (the Hill Country has quite a large German-heritage population).

"The Coming King" in front of the cross. You may be able to see a fellow (he'll show up in a later picture too!) working on cleaning and repairing the baptismal pool around "The Coming King" statue.

Title carved into the back of the statue.

"Divine Servant"

Looking east along I-10 toward San Antonio

Coming closer to the cross

Information plaques were located within the cross - note the picture accompanying the text for later too!

Looking directly up

In the area around the cross were many stones with prayers written on them.

The beds on either side of where I'm standing have stones with prayers written on them.

There were piles of stones in various places available for others to write their prayers...

... additional prayer stones...

... and more prayer stones. It was obvious that some people came prepared with stones to leave; others took stones from the stacks and wrote the prayers while there -- there were a few marking pens, but they were unfortunately rather dry from being out in the heat.

Remember earlier I said to remember the photo that was on the sign within the cross?

Carl wanted to re-create the picture, so I knelt on the ground and took his picture upwards.

A few minutes later, a guy came and was taking pictures for several folks from the ground looking up, so we had him take our pictures too.

This shows the guy who was taking the pictures -- he was lying on the ground, not just kneeling. He was also the guy who had been working on cleaning and repairing the baptismal pool (that I mentioned would be showing up again later!).

"The Great Commission"

As we were heading out, another look back.

"Hope"

We had contemplated driving out to look for fields of wildflowers, but we weren't energetic enough to do that, so we took this picture of a small group of bluebonnets up in the garden area near the cross.

We saw several of these signs as we were driving up to the parking area near the cross -- and we thought they were funny, so stopped to take a picture!

Last sign as we were leaving

It was an interesting spot to visit. The project was done by The Coming King Foundation. More information can be found here: https://thecrossatkerrville.org
