Visiting with friends

We met Jim and Sandy at Virginia Landing a couple of weeks ago. They were going to be moving to an RV park near Williamsburg, so we decided to get together again -- on Wednesday they came up to the farm to visit.

The mama cows and calves are in the pasture that is near the house, so we get to see them more frequently...

Carl had taken these pictures before Jim and Sandy came...

The calves can be so cute...

The common response to that is, "They have to be!"

Especially when there are two or three playing together, they are engaging to watch.

This is a sight I don't often see -- you may be able to see that there are two calves nursing from that mama cow - her own calf is beside her on the far side, and a milk-poacher is nursing from the back! A little after we took this picture, the poacher moved to the cow's side, and she turned her head and sniffed and realized he wasn't hers! She immediately sent him on his way - no more poaching on her!

While Jim and Sandy were visiting, about half of the cows came up to get water...

They were curious about us!

Carl took a selfie with the cows behind us.

A few more cows coming up for water... and a view across the pasture to the fall-colored leaves across the way.

It was so nice to get to spend some time with Jim and Sandy and get to talk with them some more. We hope that our paths will cross theirs again in the future!
