East to Idaho

Back in March when we were in Yuma and went out to eat with Will, Allen and Donna, we asked a question that many people ask us: "What is the favorite place you've visited?" Both Will and Allen responded with "Wallace, Idaho"! They said that it was an old silver mining town in the northern panhandle of Idaho and just a neat town. Well, with that kind of recommendation, we put it on the list of places we'd like to visit.

It was just a couple of hour trip from our campground in Washington, so, on Monday, we left the Thousand Trails campground late morning on our way a little south and a little east.

"Welcome to Idaho" (with another motorhome and towed vehicle just in front of us!)

Our route took us through Coeur d'Alene and we were alongside the lake for several miles...

... it is a gorgeous lake!

Lots of folks on the lake taking advantage of the beautiful weather.

After we got checked in at Wallace RV Park, we decided to take a walk into town -- it is only about 1/2 a block to reach the edge of town with its Welcome to Historic Wallace and Welcome to Wallace, Idaho signs!

An interesting "bridge" to allow heavy vehicles to get to the road where the RV park is located.

This was the view of that bridge we had when we were driving to the RV park in Gracie - as we were in a heavy vehicle, we were supposed to turn from the road into that area between the "Jersey barriers". We weren't sure that we could make the turn, so drove back through town and then came at the bridge straight on. It seems that some years ago a construction project required heavy trucks to cross a small bridge that could not bear their weight. So, a band-aid was built and remains...

Wallace is a small town in a steep narrow valley - houses are built up the hill with wonderful wooden staircases to reach the upper streets. I climbed up just one street high...

A look down toward town from where Carl was standing at the bottom of the steps...

A look down toward town from where I was at the top of the steps (when I was at the first street)

It turns out that Wallace identifies itself as the Center of the Universe! So... we took a selfie in front of the directional sign...

The actual plaque is in the middle of an intersection...

-- thankfully there is not much traffic so you can get a picture of the plaque in the middle of the intersection without taking your life in your hands!

Neat storefronts...

Neat downtown street!

It appears to be a nice town and we're looking forward to exploring it!
