We reached continental Europe on Sunday...
Coming to Lisbon...
We heard that Lisbon is built over 7 hills.
Bridge over the Tagus
Statue above Sanctuary of Christ the King
Looking over the pool area back toward the bridge over the Talus
Showing some of what Carl goes through (on his toes putting the camera above the plexiglass) to get the pictures for us to share on this blog!
There was already another cruise ship at port - MSC Fantasia.
Coming up to the port
Carl saw graffiti on the side of a building that he thought I may have arranged to make (I <heart> Henry -- his middle name is Henry).
Some residential buildings
We could see that some of the buildings are faced with ceramic tiles
After getting docked, we retrieved our tickets from our cabin for the shore excursion which we had booked and headed to the Stardust Theater to be joined with our excursion group.
Since we spent almost two hours waiting for our tour to be called, I took a picture of Carl in the theater since it seemed for a while that was all we were going to see of Lisbon!
Eventually our tour got called and we were heading off to join our tour guide for a walking tour of Lisbon.
Carl's first step on the continent of Europe (this is his first trip to Europe).
Even though it was a walking tour, we took a bus into the city. It dropped us at a square in the central part of the city...
... near the Gloria Funicular, the riding of which was part of our tour.
One car left soon after we arrived...
... but another was on its way down.
On the funicular ...
A plaque on the wall of the tram commemorated the that Celebration of the Centennial of the Funicular had been held in 1985.
The engineer's compartment on the back of the car (used when the car is descending).
After our ride up the hill, some of our tour participants exiting the tram.
At the top, we had a good view over the city...
Garden area and the city below
Fort on the hill opposite (note that our guide told us all about what we were seeing, but... we don't remember it all!)
One of our fellow tour participants took our picture.
There were also streetcars (I think our tour guide said that the same fellow who engineered the funicular also engineered the street cars)
The remainder of our tour had us walking down from the top where the funicular took us all the way down almost to harborside. Here there were narrow sidewalks like we had experienced in Ponta Delgada.
A tuk-tuk was another way to tour the city.
There were many streets which were pedestrian only and restaurants set up their tables out in the streets.
We saw US brands along the way (Pizza Hut).
Our guide told us that different pedestrian streets have painted the street different colors (this one being blue) to differentiate themselves.
Another tiled house
One of the outdoor eating areas -- by this time we were getting hungry...
Our guide stopped in a square where we could find restrooms and coffee shops...
We went to a coffee shop and got water and a couple of sweet treats!
A picture of us inside the coffee shop taken by one of our fellow passengers / tour participants.
Ceremonial guard in front of a museum
The museum and guard
Walking down a pedestrian street with many shops on each side
A view of the new (Uber Eats bike delivery person) in the midst of the old
The sidewalks were almost all cobblestone - in some places decorative patterns were incorporated.
Santa Justa lift (I am pretty certain our guide told us that this was built by the same fellow who did the funicular)
Bridge over the pedestrian mall from further down the street -- connects to the lift.
We came to Rossio Square
... central plaza in Lisbon with wavy tile pattern on the ground, two fountains, and a statue to Dom Pedro
Selfie in front of one of the fountains
Statue of Dom Pedro
National Theater at the end of the square
Train station near Rossio square
We continued walking...
Stop at Church of St Dominic
Inside the church
Candles in the church -- the ones on the right are traditional candles - you put a contribution into the bowl and light the candle you want to light from others already burning; however, for the ones on the left you put a coin in the slot and an LED candle would light up for you. High-tech prayer candles, huh?
Another American restaurant
Way down at the end of the street is Arco da Rua Augusta |
A coffee shop with pastries displayed in the window -- we had previously gotten two custard pies when we had stopped earlier.
Walking down the pedestrian mall -- getting closer to the arch
Almost at the arch!
On the other side of the arch
Big square down near the harbor with an amphitheater.
Self-proclaimed beer museum (seems it actually was just a place to buy beer)
When we were a distance away, we had wondered what these things in large clear jars were -- from a distance, Carl thought snack mix -- turned out to be cigarette butts - we guessed to call attention to littering.
Interesting architecture
Some tilework repair needed on this building -- maybe Becky (from SOWER project in February) and I have a potential job here!
We made it back to the ship in time to view the sail away...
Leaving the port
On our way out of the harbor
We enjoyed our visit to Lisbon, though our arranged tour needed to be shortened significantly due to some issues that were never made clear to us (everyone was very apologetic but no one ever took responsibility). We are thinking we may take it up with the cruise shore excursion desk. But, we still enjoyed the tour, and while it was a bit rushed, it was long enough for us.
