Almost to Nevada

Wednesday was a busy day as we had a relatively long drive (to Wendover, Utah, within sight of West Wendover, Nevada) and we stopped for 4+ hours of shopping and lunch before we left the suburbs of Salt Lake City.

We have arrived at the Historic Wendover Airport (http://www.wendoverairbase.com/,our second Harvest Host location) and are looking forward to a restful night's sleep.

Our shopping included Walgreens (for prescriptions), Sam's Club, Costco, and Walmart (where we left Gracie while doing the other shopping). Carl thoughtfully found a Golden Corral for lunch so we wouldn't be famished while shopping.

This is a relatively new Golden Corral (in Orem, Utah)...

The layout of the food serving area was quite different...

It seemed more compact, but had all the regular favorites, and the staff was super friendly and attentive!

After all our lunch and shopping (and Gracie was significantly heavier with all the additional items!), we headed north and west...

The overlook that Dwayne and I had stopped at previously to view the Great Salt Lake seemed to be closed, so I got a picture as best I could while Carl was driving...

Morton Salt Works on the shore of the Great Salt Lake.

About 10 miles before the Nevada state line, we stopped at the rest area along I-80 that has information about the Bonneville Salt Flats...

...you can walk out on the salt flats from the rest area...

... we joined in with others who were walking out...

Some panoramas...

Which one is the real Patti?

Which one is the real Carl?

There were folks who had driven out from the rest area onto the salt flats...

... but we decided that wasn't something we needed to do!

There was water standing in some places, and we had been told that the surface can be quite soft and mushy where it is more wet and it is easy to get bogged down. We decided we didn't need to find out how fast Gracie could go!

It still was pretty and rather other-worldly!

We stopped to get fuel just before leaving Utah as the prices seemed to be lower. Then we got off I-80 to go into Wendover to get to the historic airfield. Unfortunately, we got to the airfield too late to be able to visit the museum (we may get to see it in the morning) -- one of our fellow Harvest Host members who is staying told us some of the history -- that it was opened in early 1940s for training of bombers -- including B-29 training. The area over the salt flats was ideal practice ground.

On Thursday, we have a short trip planned west past Wells, Nevada to our friends', Nancy and Steve's, campground for a rally of our SKP Christian Fellowship group. We look forward to time of fellowship and hope to get at least some of the dust that we've accumulated over the past few weeks out of Gracie!
