Red Canyon

On Monday afternoon, after we got checked in and parked at Lutherwood Campground, we drove up to the area near Bryce Canyon National Park to find where we would park next. There is a First-Come, First-Served (FCFS) National Forest campground in Red Canyon and dispersed camping along Toms Best Spring Road that we wanted to check out -- neither have reservations, so we would need to find a place big enough for Gracie.

We liked the National Forest campground and there were a few sites big enough for Gracie, but we would pay to park there ($10.50/night with the Golden Age Passport that gives 1/2 price sites). The dispersed camping in the National Forest is free. Neither has hookups, though the campground has a dump station and, I think, water fill (which we could use for a fee even if we don't stay there). But, we plan to dump and fill fresh before we leave Lutherwood and we would be good for about 2 weeks -- and we only have 10 days before we'll join our Christian SKP RV group for a rally at Nancy and Steve's campground, Welcome Station, in northeast Nevada.

So our plan is to travel to the Toms Best Spring Road on Tuesday morning -- we identified a couple of areas that had open spaces that we liked -- no guarantee they will be there on Tuesday, but we'll see.

Meanwhile, Carl took some pictures while I was driving...

There are some areas that look like big mounds of sand, but I guess they are more solid than the sand dunes we saw a few days ago.

There are two short tunnels on the route we will take -- they indicate 13'6" clearance, but they are arched. Gracie is 12'8" at the tallest, so we're figuring we might try to straddle the center line...

... as long as no other vehicles are coming.

There was a Forest Service Visitor's Center...

This was a view from the parking lot of the Visitor's Center

Some of the information in the Visitor's Center.

We hope to go back to the Visitor's Center and to other places in the area to do some hiking.

Some of those "hoodoos"

In some places, they look like cathedral spires.
