Carl loading the elevator into the barn

There were a few "square" bales left over from the previous haying that needed to be stored in the hay loft, so, a few days ago, Carl helped out by loading the bales from the trailer onto the elevator.

Loading alfalfa bales - these were pretty heavy bales!

Loading grass hay - these were lighter:

Carl had to time putting the bales on the elevator at a rate that matched the rate at which the person inside the loft (Jimmy) was moving them into the storage.

I thought this was funny... after Carl had put his wallet and Leatherman on the countertop, I noticed that he had a collection of hay in his wallet! I guess he knew it was valuable!

  1. Patti - this is Linda. I laughed when I saw your quotes around the "square" bales of hay. Once I went to the feed store and said I wanted some of those rectangle bales of hay. They said you mean square bales of hay? I say no, rectangles. Then they explained they were called square because of the square on the end is how they come out of the machine or something. Sounds like you all are really great help around there! Jimmy will be sorry when you're gone!

  2. That's funny! Yes, the square on the end is, indeed, the way that they come out of the baler. When I was a kid, that's the only size and shape my dad baled. Jimmy has a number of pieces of equipment that reduce the labor required.
A few years ago I created a YouTube video of the haymaking process - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHJ-S41dE8k - if you go to about 3 minutes in, you can see the baling of "square" bales - except I called them "rectangular" bales then!
