Saturday's bike ride

When I was originally making plans for visiting Canada this summer, I had planned that we would spend 5 nights at Cavendish Campground in the Prince Edward Island National Park for July 6-10... but when I tried to make reservations (just a few minutes after reservations opened on March 18), all the sites were gone for July 6-8! What in the world! I got the last 2 days booked, and then started looking at what was going on - turns out that the Cavendish Music Festival was July 6-8. I debated changing the dates we would be on PEI, but decided instead to book a private campground for the 3 days that I couldn't get in the National Park.

One benefit of the private park was that it was near the Confederation Trail - a rail-to-trail path that crosses Prince Edward Island. So, on Saturday, we found a convenient trailhead and went for a ride...

The trail was a nice fine gravel -- well maintained. There were a few areas where there were bumps where driveways went across the trail, but, for the most part, it was very nice!

A pretty creek along the trail

There were information signs along the trail - Carl took pictures of some of them:

Wow - look at how curvy that rail track was!

We found information online about the trail, but it was a bit difficult figuring out where there were trailheads where we could park the Jeep and get our bikes onto the trail. This map was displayed along the trail, but was indicated as "Prince Edward Island Snowmobile Association Trail Map"!

Neither Carl nor I are very good at interpreting picture-signs. We got "no hunting", "no horseback riding". Carl thought the third one was "no corned beef hash", but I think it is "no littering"...

...the last two, we weren't sure about -- but I think they indicate "no cross country skiing" and "no snow-shoeing". While we were on the trail, we couldn't figure out why those would be prohibited, but the earlier map picture explains it -- during the winter, the Snowmobile Association leases the use of the trail in some areas (including where we were riding), and thus other uses of the trail (including walking) are prohibited.

We rode about 20 miles round trip, and were glad to get on our bikes again!
