Around Herbster

Some pictures from around and out of Herbster, Wisconsin...

It was pretty rainy on Tuesday, but after the rain stopped, we could see the far side of Lake Superior out our front window (the dark blue line on the lake between the two motorhomes).

This is from Wednesday morning - again we could see the far shore (Minnesota) across Lake Superior.

Carl was sitting on the bench enjoying listening to the surf.

A panoramic picture from the bench at the beach in front of our campground.

We had hoped to go bike riding, but it was pretty windy on Wednesday, so we decided to drive to check out another campground.

We drove a little inland to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and Birch Grove National Forest Campground. When we leave Herbster Campground on Monday, we plan to go to a FCFS (first-come, first-served) campground in Ashland, WI, but... we have heard that it can be full with an overflow area and people constantly cruising through the campground looking for an available site. There are not a lot of campgrounds in this area, and the ones that take reservations are all booked except for scattered days here and there. So, I had found this National Forest campground which is also first-come, first-served, but a bit more off the beaten path so may not be as busy. The information about the campground indicated a max size of RV of 35', and Gracie is 40', but, looking at the satellite view online, it looked to me that they may have some longer sites - so we went to check it out. We found a beautiful campground, 16 sites, only 1 of which was occupied on Wednesday (it may have greater occupancy on the weekends), and most of the sites would be able to accommodate Gracie's size. The campground is between two lakes; we saw some folks out in a small motorboat in one of them. We are thinking that, when we leave here on Monday, one of us will take the Jeep and drive to Ashland and see if there is a site available there... if there isn't, we would be happy to stay in the National Forest campground. The only challenge is that we did not have cellular service while there, so blog posting may be challenging... so if we go "quiet" next week, that may be why!

Near the entrance to the campground there were wild roses and other pretty wild flowers...

Wild roses - pretty smell too!

On our way back to Herbster, we stopped to deposit a piece of mail in the Cornucopia, WI mailbox, and then decided to park and visit the Ehler General Store.

They had a wide selection of goods at the General Store - from produce to grocery staples, from hardware to greeting cards, from tee-shirts to ready-to-eat items.

We had been seeing signs on a number of properties indicating "NOT For Sale" - it was becoming obvious that this was not just a notification to "don't ask, we're not interested in selling" -- and a tee-shirt in the General Store gave us the web address for more information (https://www.lakesuperiornotforsale.com/). It seems that there is controversy over the use of water in the area, and the signs and tee-shirts identify folks on one side of the controversy.

A sign in the General Store also illustrated the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred in Lake Superior since 1800 (more information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_shipwrecks_in_the_Great_Lakes)
