Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center

On Friday, we went to visit the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. We learned many things about Lake Superior and this area of the country...

Information plaques about Lake Superior... "Did you know...?"...

"...interminable forests of pine, sufficient to supply all the wants of the citizens... for all time to come." (Wisconsin Congressman Ben Eastman, July 1852). Yeah, right...

If you're ever trying to figure out what is causing something to happen, "Follow the money." (including this in honor of my brother who often reminds me of this!).

Hmmm... too good to be true?

July 1896 "A handbook for the home seeker"...

Zoomed in on the pictures --- wow -- those are some big vegetables!

Early campground residents!

Carl went on a 10-day canoe trip in the Boundary Waters area in 1988.

This is a bit south and east of where we are.

An RV park?!?!?

We had considered going to a campground on Madeline Island -- but the combined expense of ferry and limited access to campground space dissuaded us.

After visiting the exhibit area and seeing the movie, we took the stairs up to the observation deck -- about 4 stories up. I thought we might see the lake from there, but it was not visible due to the growth of trees.

There was a pretty farmstead in sight though...

... and information about it.

On the second floor of the visitor center, there was an art exhibit...

This photograph (or display of photos) was interesting...

Close up -- it was a photograph (or multiple photographs) cut into strips and woven together...

It made a very interesting picture!

Along the stairway down from second to main floor, there was an exhibit about eagles nests...

"Nests ... are reused and added to year after year. An established nest can be as large as 11 feet deep and 20 feet wide, and weigh almost two tons." Wow!

There was an example of an eagle's nest (the broom is part of a mural on the wall behind - even though it looks like it may be there for the use of the eagle to do some nest cleaning!).

There was a mounted eagle on the other side (and again, the mural makes it look odd!).

We enjoyed our visit to the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center!
