Thursday was another busy day...
Carl had an appointment to get a monitor that he is going to be wearing for the next few weeks.
Because we like to have something to look forward to after a doctor's appointment, we had already planned to head to YC's Mongolian Grill for lunch. Like all Mongolian grills (or all that we've been to), you fill your bowl with the raw meat (frozen thin strips), veggies, noodles, etc., and then mix your sauce and give it to the guys doing the cooking. They cook your food and deliver it to you back in a bowl. I like to have one of the folks who work there prepare my sauce -- they ask whether I want it spicy or sweet (sweet for me) and some other questions and then they ladle in various combinations with a wild abandon!
The soup and rice and crisps are all you can eat -- and that's my bowl after cooking... |
... and Carl's bowl after cooking. |
It was YUMMY! And enough for us each to bring half home for another meal!
We had gone to a mattress store that had Brooklyn Bedding mattresses a couple of weeks ago. We've been hearing about Brooklyn Bedding mattresses from a lot of RV folks (well, they are RV Video=bloggers and they are being compensated to talk about the Brooklyn Bedding products). We had wanted to get a new mattress but wanted to go to a store where they had them in stock to try lying on them before deciding exactly what we wanted. There was a store just down the block from where we are staying in Mesa, so we went there a couple of weeks ago and decided which mattress to get. We could have had them deliver, install, and carry our old mattress away for a fee, but we didn't want to get rid of the old mattress (it is a Sleep Number bed and still could be usable in the future); or we could have gone over to the factory in Glendale and pick it up (a little over an hour drive in no traffic); or we could have FedEx deliver it for no charge. It turned out that choosing FedEx meant that we waited almost two weeks before it came -- the factory would have given us an "already made" one if we picked it up, but waited through the production process for the FedEx delivery. We wished we had chosen the "go to Glendale" option... anyway, FedEx let me know on Wednesday that the mattress would be delivered between 10:20am and 2:20pm on Thursday -- right when we would be away for the medical appointment and lunch. We asked a neighbor to watch out if a signature was required (turns out it was not).
Sure enough, while we were at lunch, we got notified that the mattress had been delivered...
We knew that the mattress came rolled in a box, compressed and it would "puff out" when unrolled.
When we got home, we got the Sleep Number bed disassembled, and then "we" (mainly Carl) brought the new mattress-in-a-box inside. Once we got it inside, we put it on a rug that we use for sliding things in the rig -- like Miss Kitty's litter pan -- so much easier to slide something heavy than carrying it -- our floors are a hard surface.
... doesn't that look like a comfortable mattress? |
It had gobs and gobs of a shrink-wrap type of material that we unwrapped, and then it was in a large plastic bag...
... eventually we got it all un-packaged and on the bed platform, letting it "off gas" any chemical smell and continue to expand. |
We repacked the box with the components of the Sleep Number bed (except we couldn't compress it like the factory had done with the new mattress). We'll plan to return it to the container in Virginia in the spring.
By evening, we weren't noticing any peculiar smells, so we made the bed and got our first night's sleep on our new mattress. Carl has found it comfortable from the beginning; I'm finding it a little stiff, but we were told to give it 30 nights to determine if it will work for us. The company has a 120 night in-home sleep comfort guarantee, so if it doesn't turn out to be comfortable, we will have options.
The new mattress is a LOT taller than our previous one, so some of our bedding will no longer fit, and Miss Kitty has to jump higher to get up on the bed (no problem for her). It also is a bit heavier (115 pounds compared to 68 pounds) so is a little more difficult to raise the platform to access the under-bed storage; we may want to get new gas struts to make lifting the bed a little easier.
Busy day!
