A visit to the Gros Morne South

The south section of Gros Morne National Park is all around us where we are camped in Shoal Brook, Newfoundland. Our campground neighbors had visited the Gros Morne Discovery Centre on Thursday, and told us that we should go to see the views and information provided there. Sunday was cloudy, but not raining, so we decided that it would be a good day to go see the Discovery Centre.

View from the upper deck at the Discovery Centre. We knew that we could see the Centre from Gracie, so we should be able to see Gracie from the Discovery Centre -- I marked a red arrow about where Gracie is in the picture (I can't see her even zoomed in, that's just the area where she is parked).

There were locator signs around the railing on the upper deck so we could know what we were seeing -- the higher mountain in the distant center of this picture (in the distance) is Gros Morne, the mountain that gives its name to the park. The body of water is Bonne Bay.

Looking east across the south arm of Bonne Bay to Lomond - this is the peninsula that is across from our campground.

Looking south toward Shoal Brook where we're staying -- on the right, the high land is Tablelands, where there is a section of exposed mantle of the earth.

Back at the campground, a couple of small trailers arrived!

On Sunday afternoon, I also worked on programming the GPS for our trip on Tuesday. We plan to check out some boondocking locations to provide feedback to one of the information sources that we use. The information source is Day's End Directory; it is a crowdsourced directory of free and low cost parking locations for RVs. We use it to find parking, but we also are part of the "crowd sourcing". The first year that Dwayne and I joined the Day's End Directory (many years ago), we had to pay to access it (I think it was $24 and required that we were members of the Escapees RV Club to initially join). After that, I have not had to pay because I contribute to the information in the directory. If you go to a spot that is listed in the Directory and provide an update, you get 2 points; if you find a new spot and report it, you get 4 points; if you go to a listed spot and just say, "The listing is accurate.", you get 1 point. To renew for another year "costs" 24 points, or you can pay (up to $24) if you have less than 24 points. We appreciate the directory and appreciate that we can give back to other RVers. In Newfoundland, there are a lot of places listed that have not been visited or updated in a number of years. On Sunday afternoon, we drove to two listed locations that are near where we are camping -- we found that one of the locations now has "No Overnight Parking" signs (they looked brand new); the other location had no such signs, but there were a couple of minor improvements that I suggested for the listing... so I figure we'll get 1-2 points for each location while taking a little detour in the Jeep. On Tuesday's drive, we're going past 10 different listed locations in Gracie -- there were actually more in the directory, but they are either further off our route or indicate that the location is not recommended for big rigs, so we won't be verifying those -- but we should be able to verify the 10 locations. I also have identified a couple of other locations via Google Maps or Truckers Path (app for truckers) that may be possible additions to the directory. I've got the coordinates for each of the locations stored in the Garmin GPS, and we'll just check them out as we move on Tuesday. I have additional ones identified for Wednesday's drive, but I don't have those in the GPS yet. Hoping to get some Day's End Directory points and help out fellow Directory users!
