Remainder of our Labrador visit

On Tuesday afternoon, after our hike and eating in Red Bay, we returned along the Trans Labrador Highway to our B&B in Forteau, NL.

Along the way, we stopped at a harbor in one of the towns (I don't remember which one...).

Carl down by the water...

... taking pictures -- at the back of this picture is a fishing boat tied up at the pier - the icebergs are as large as the fishing boat.

Some have very odd shapes!

Carl had expressed a desire to touch or pick up an iceberg...

he was very close...

... but the waves were lapping in and he had to stay out of their way to avoid getting wet and cold feet!

He got one and picked it up..

A funny video by Carl about the iceberg -- if the embedded one doesn't work, I've uploaded it to YouTube here: https://youtu.be/KfvhJSrQ-bU

He had said, "It's really heavy!", so I decided to try picking one up...

I got one on the beach... it was a little sandy...

... but I didn't think it was any heavier than regular ice (I think Carl was pulling my leg!).

We finished our drive in the town of Forteau at Grenfell Louis A. Hall B&B -- a historic building in the town that was formerly known as the Forteau Nursing Station (http://www.grenfellbandb.ca/home/6).

We had the Nursing Aide Room (each room was named for an individual who worked in the station or identified how the room had previously been used).

Our room -- we had to be diligent not to hit our heads on the sloping ceiling at the head of the bed!

We sat in the living room in the evening and soon several other guests also joined us there and we had interesting conversations! One couple from North Carolina had previously been fulltime RVers and recognized that the "Texas Jeep" in the parking area was equipped for towing behind a motorhome. There was another fellow there traveling by himself (his wife was home enjoying her daughter and grandchildren while he enjoyed traveling -- she had been with him to visit some of Quebec, but flew back home to New Jersey from Montreal, while he continued driving up to Quebec City and then up through northeastern Quebec to Labrador City in Labrador and then all the way around the Trans Labrador Highway. I think he indicated that the road was now paved all the way from Labrador City to the southern part where we were -- but there may still be some unpaved areas in Quebec. It is a LONG ways though, and though I think he was glad he had done it, he didn't seem inclined to recommend the trip! There were also two ladies from Nova Scotia - one from near Halifax and the other from Cape Breton - who shared some about their travels and where they live in Nova Scotia.

We got an "okay" nights sleep -- the B&B was full and there were a number of people leaving early in the morning to catch the early ferry back to Newfoundland or heading off to other places (the two ladies from Nova Scotia were going to Battle Harbour -- an overnight ferry trip to an island off the east shore of Labrador) -- being in strange surroundings, and having a shared bath with multiple other rooms, an older house with noisy floors, and having a number of folks getting up quite early... we didn't sleep terrifically well.

We made it down for breakfast in the morning -- the folks from North Carolina (former fulltime RVers) were there so we got to chat with them again.

Juices and jams available for us!

Some fantastical shapes to the icebergs...

This one looks like a sleeping dragon!

We had a couple of hours before we needed to be at the ferry terminal, so we drove back east just a short distance to see Point Amour Lighthouse.

It is the tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada and second tallest in all of Canada (http://www.pointamourlighthouse.ca/home/)

There were two tour busses at the lighthouse, so we didn't go in... instead choosing to head to the ferry. We stopped at two grocery stores and picked up a few items we needed to make pumpkin soup in the next few days, and also got sandwiches to have for lunch before we boarded the ferry.

Ferry coming in - about to disembark. We had friends that we had met when we went out to the Pub 'n' Grub near St Anthony (they were also staying at Viking RV Park, though it was too cold to visit when we were there!) -- they moved to St Barbe RV Parc the same day we did, so we got to actually visit with them on Monday. We traveled over to Labrador on Tuesday; they were coming on Wednesday -- so they were coming over on the ferry that we would be taking back. We stood at the end of the ramp and waved to them as they arrived! They brought their RV as well as their Jeep and were going to stay multiple days in Labrador.

From the ferry -- some icebergs...

... and one more!

On the trip back on the ferry -- the couple that we had met at the B&B were on the same ferry, so we got to visit with them on the trip -- it made the journey go very quickly! It is so nice to meet new people and get to hear their stories! They are about halfway through a multi-month trip to the northeast US and Atlantic Canada.

So we made it safely to and from Labrador, and actually found the weather and the roads better there than we found in the northern part of Newfoundland! Thursday we would start heading further south in Newfoundland.
